Tone Devil Classic PAF’s:
Spellbound
Both Spellbound & Witchery coil shapes are based off early PAFs and pre sticker PAFs. The unique coil designs make for articulate, open and organic sounding sets. Looser bottom end and spongey pick attack, in turn creating luscious harmonic content and note bloom
Not only a great set for LP’s but also great in SG’s & 335’s if you want that classic low wind PAF tone, as an alternative to T Top style pickups
Also available in other magnet configurations upon request
NECK - ALNICO III +/- 7.6k - Warm, with a syrupy quality coming off the strings. Bottom end is full, with a loose-ish feel. Refined expressive clean tones, but with enough drive on tap for rock genres
BRIDGE - ALNICO II +/- 7.7k - A perfect marriage of A2, low wind and coil shape. Crisp crunch in the mid range, creamy highs and a percussive thump to the bottom end
Witchery
Both Spellbound & Witchery coil shapes are based off early PAFs and pre sticker PAFs. The unique coil designs make for articulate, open and organic sounding sets. Looser bottom end and spongey pick attack, in turn creating luscious harmonic content and note bloom
The Spellbound coils lay the foundations, with some ‘Witchery’ to the bridge pickup. Some more output is on tap, without compromising the Spellbound’s tonal palette. Open, Organic, with that spongey pick attack & note bloom - the Witchery set just breathes and oozes tone! If you love the tones of ‘Oscar’ on the Doug and Pat show, this is the set for you
Also available in other magnet configurations upon request
NECK - ALNICO IV - 7.7k - No mud. No dullnesss. Sweet singing highs when opened up and when backed off its warm, clear and expressive. Balances perfectly with the bridge pickup
BRIDGE - ALNICO IV - 8.2k - The A4 is balanced across the frequencies and with the additional gauss, notes seem to bounce of the strings as though electrically charged. There is almost a feeling of the guitar coaxing you into a more aggressive playing style with the available growl on tap. However, backing off the volume, the pickup projects a mellow chirp for cleaner playing. Opened up, the highs are crisp and defined and rolling the tone off presents a woody creaminess, hailing a nod to a vintage era
Revelry
The inspiration for developing this set was Tom Bukovac’s glorious sounding ‘58 Burst. In Uncle Larry’s own words “That guitar is not of this earth…it’s got so much magic in it”
While the physical aspects of the guitar are something to behold, Tone Devil’s vision was to try harness the wonderful tonal nuances into a set of PAF’s
Tone Devil presents to you an A2 set that has been through a journey of testing and refinement. Encompassing unique coil shapes, the Revelry PAF’s have a vintage presence and tap into classic rock recordings with ease. There is also a sense and feel you are holding a well aged, broken in guitar. The makers vision has been accomplished. A2 Perfection? … Tone Devil thinks so
NECK - ALNICO II - 8.2k - For players that like to have some variety, this neck pickup allows for singing solos when opened up. When backed off, it cleans up to a syrupy warm expressive tone. The higher than typical DC allows for a great middle position on this set. Players can switch here for thick chugging riffs (also available in lower output if preferred - 7.7k)
BRIDGE - ALNICO II - 8.35k - Authoritative bridge pickup. Rich harmonic content and singing creamy highs. Tighter low end than the Spellbound but still has a present percussive feel. The A2 gives more midrange projection allowing plenty of bark and crunch on tap
Tone Devil Tribute PAF’s:
Black Magic - Peter Green Set
Based on the most famous Les Paul in the world - ‘Greeny’ owned originally by Peter Green
This set has a custom wound neck pickup incorporating Heavy Formvar wire (as per the alleged Sam Li repair). Middle position is out of phase just like Greeny
Using the Phil Harris demo videos and Fleetwood Mac recordings, countless hours have gone into experimenting and testing coils, resistance and magnets to get all three positions just right. Getting the perfect out of phase tone and the balance of that tone between the two pickups (whilst not compromising the openess) took a lot of work! The Black Magic set not only captures the sublime out of phase tones of the original Greeny, the neck and bridge also sound phenomenal, unleashing classic PAF tones
Mythical - Eric Clapton Beano Set
Stolen in mid 1966 from a rehearsal room in North West London, Eric Clapton’s 1960 Les Paul burst has never been seen since. What has been left behind however, has gained a mythical like status. The player, the Les Paul guitar and the Beano album is where it all began, sparking and igniting a craze for the Les Paul and ‘that sound’ that would sweep the nation
Armed with a JTM45 and Les Paul, hours have been spent listening and comparing to the Beano recordings, slowly cracking the code behind these elusive and distinct guitar tones. The final result is a Tone Devil set allows you to tap into that mythical sound! Comes standard with double white neck bobbins and double black bridge bobbins (with lightly aged poles/screws)
Tone Devil tip: On your JTM / Bluesbreaker amp, turn the bright channel volume and the bass to around 7. Tweak the mids and treble to suit. On your guitar flick to the middle position, put the bridge pick up Vol & Tone on 9-10 and the neck pickup Vol & Tone on around 5-6. This is a good place to start and fine tune from there. This set really shines in the middle position and really nails the Beano tone! Flick to the bridge for extra bite when needed
Black Cat Bones - Paul Kossoff Set
A set inspired by Paul Kossoff’s stripped top Les Paul
Looking for live at Isle of Wight tones or Beat Club Sessions? This set will give you those fat singing tones on the neck and a bridge pickup that cuts through when needed
Differing coil shapes for each pickup. The neck has more output than the bridge and the extra ‘oomph’ is really needed to replicate kossoffs leads on the neck position. Cleans up nicely when rolling off the volume producing a warm mellow tone. The bridge is percussive, throaty, with a nice mid range bark. Both of these pickups capture legendary tones from a legendary player! Plugged into a nice Marshall amp, this set really nails songs such as Alright Now, Mr Big and Fire & Water!
Sigil - Jimmy Page Set
A pickup set based on Jimmy Pages #1 59’ Les Paul, acquired from Joe Walsh in 1969
A very powerful neck pickup and low output bridge pickup recreate JP’s very unique tones in all three positions
During 1972 the bridge pickup of JP’s LP became faulty and was changed out to a T Top pickup. This set comes in two options, pre 72’ & post 72’ (but before the changes to Seymour Duncan pickups in the mid 80’s). The pre 72’ has a PAF style bridge pickup (around 8k) with a custom long A5 magnet and the post 72’ has a T Top style wind (under 8k) using poly coated copper wire and a short A5 magnet. The PAF neck pickup stays the same for both sets. Either set, you choose whether to rock out Royal Albert Hall style or Madison Square Garden style!
Behemoth - Bernie Marsden Set
A pickup set based on the legendary ‘The Beast’ 59’ Les Paul owned by Bernie Marsden
While Bernie Marsden was still with us, Tone Devil set about to recreate the tones of this legendary guitar. Many hours have been spent listening to Bernie play during his interviews and comparing winds and magnets
Neck pickup is very bridge pickup sounding, and in BM’s own words “goes from a whisper to a scream”. The bridge pickup has a throaty mid range with plenty of growl and bite. Just like ‘The Beast’ a vast amount of tones can be had tweaking the volume & tone controls and pickup selector
